Balasore: Tension erupted at Tentuliapada Square in Pratappur under Nilagiri block in Balasore district after a speeding truck mowed down a labourer Wednesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Gopal Patra alias Babula (49) of Gopalpur village.
According to reports, the accident occurred when Patra was going for his work at a nearby brick kiln in the morning. The speeding truck which was coming from the opposite direction ran over Patra, killing him on the spot.
The driver and helper of the vehicle fled the spot soon after the accident.
The locals, who staged a road blockade demanding Rs 2 lakh as compensation for the bereaved family, demanded action against illegal sand mining in the area.
Even as a police team led by Nilagiri police station IIC Dinabandhu Mahanta reached the spot and tried to pacify the mob, the protest was going on till the filing of this report.
