Two brutally attacked, gang war suspected

Cuttack: In a signal of gang wars rearing their ugly heads in the silver city once again, a man who was acquitted in a murder case recently and one of his friends were attacked by some unidentified bike-borne men near the district collector’s office here Sunday.
Prakash Behera alias Chakuli and his friend, Purnachandra Das were chatting near a tea stall when four bikers came and attacked them, said police. As the two men ran from the spot to save themselves, the bikers chased them and attacked them repeatedly with some sharp weapons, police added.
Left bleeding profusely, Chakuli and Das were admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital. Officials from Lalbagh police station, after getting information of the attack, reached the hospital and questioned Chakuli about the incident.
Police sources said Chakuli was attacked in connection with his involvement in the murder of Keshav Chandra Behera alias Keshia July 7, 2013. Police had filed a charge-sheet against Chakuli and eight others in that case. The local sessions court had, in its decision May 20, sentenced five accused – Bishwanath Behera, Keshav Behera, Debaraj Behera, Subhranshu Das and Shiekh Sayeed – to life imprisonment in the case. Chakuli and three others were acquitted.
Chakuli was attacked twice after the court’s judgment came. Two bombs were also thrown at his and his uncle’s houses at Shiekh Bazaar May 28, said police sources.
Meanwhile, Lalbagh police station IIC Debabrutta Baral said a case has been registered in connection with the latest attack on Chakuli and that the involvement of some local gangs is suspected.
