Jagatsinghpur, March 12: Lady Odia scientist Jyotirmayee Mohanty from Jagatsinghpur district has been nominated as one of the awardees for the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) 2023 Award for her achievements in chemistry and chemical engineering. Jyotirmayee, a scientist at the Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is the wife of Rashmiranjan Mohanty who resides at Titira village under Balikuda block in this district.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, congratulated Jyotirmayee Sunday on being selected as the first woman in India for the coveted award. Taking to his Twitter handle, the Chief Minister wrote, “I congratulate the Odia scientist Jyotirmayee Mohanty, who has been selected for the prestigious IUPAC Award 2023 @IUPAC as the country’s first woman. Her achievement in the field of chemistry is a matter of pride and glory for all. I wish her to scale greater heights of success in the coming days.”
The IUPAC announced the names of 12 awardees, February 11 in order to celebrate the ‘International Day of Women and Girls in Science’. The awards acknowledge and promote the works of women chemists and chemical engineers worldwide.
Jyotirmayee is also the first woman to receive fellowship in the Science and Engineering Research Board while she received the fellowship from the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), an award conferred by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in the United Kingdom, last year. She is the daughter of renowned pediatrician Dr Baikuntnath Patra of Chauliaganj in Cuttack.
