Barang: Binny, the orangutan at the Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) on the city’s outskirts here, will be treated for an infected wound in her throat.
The 41-year-old, Binny was brought to NZP from Pune’s Zoological Park November 20, 2003. At that time she was only 26. She is the centre of attraction at NZP, and has been staying at Nandankanan alone as the authorities could not get a partner for her.
She is kept at the feeding chamber where Nandankanan doctors are treating her. The chamber is cleaned regularly. She is now inactive and is not eating properly. The zoo authorities have expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of Binny, who is now in her old age.
Veterinary doctors from the Singapore Zoological Park (SZP) and the United Kingdom (UK) have held discussions about Binny’s condition after being informed by Nandankanan authorities.
Further discussions were held with NZP Deputy Director Jayant Kumar Das through video conferencing. It is learnt that there is no improvement even after giving Binny the treatment advised by vets from SZP and UK. Nandankanan authorities have invited doctors from abroad for the treatment of Binny. They have also sent photos containing details about the animal. “Binny is fine now. Vets are planning to operate the infected wound on her throat for an early cure,” said Das.
