Angul: The garbage problem in Angul municipality area has not been solved yet. Although the local administration held several meetings with Kushasingha villagers, all attempts at a consensus failed.
Opposition of villagers hindered the execution of the proposed garbage dumping yard in Kushasingha. Due to this the garbage management and sanitation condition of Angul has worsened.
It was learnt that the resistance of the villagers has not only slowed down progress, but has also pushed the project into oblivion. The place for the dumping yard project was selected in Kushasingha village, but the project had to be stopped midway due to the opposition of villagers.
The local administration had proposed to take Kushasingha villagers and show them the dumping yards at Bhubaneswar and Puri, but they did not agree.
The contractors left the project site midway, when villagers opposed it fearing pollution. The villagers had also set on fire the temporary camp of the police near the project site.
Later, the local administration decided to execute the project after the 2019 elections. But so far no administrative official has visited the project site.
The sweepers of the municipal body are setting afire heaps of garbage near the Angul NAC and it is causing severe problems in 23 wards. As of now there are no other arrangements for dumping the garbage.
The Executive Officer of Angul NAC, Subhendu Jena, said, “We are still holding talks with the villagers, and we will find a solution.”
The municipal sweepers who are burning heaps of garbage inside the civic area will be told not to do so, he added.
