Sambalpur: In an attempt to promote uniformity, safety, and professionalism among students, the government-run Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) in Burla near here has introduced a mandatory uniform dress code for its first-year undergraduate students starting from the 2025-2026 academic session while prohibiting the wearing of ‘dupattas’ or scarfs by girl students.
The notification stated that the prohibition of ‘dupattas’ has been made for safety concerns without elaborating further on such a restriction for girl students.
As per the notification issued by the varsity authorities, it has been made mandatory for male students to wear formal pants and shirts, while female students are given the option either to wear formal pants and shirts or salwar-kameez with a waistcoat.

“All the 1st year students (except PG and PhD) who have taken admission in the academic year 2025-26 are hereby informed that a uniform dress code is introduced in the University.
The uniform is ‘formal pants and shirt’ for boys; and either ‘formal pants and shirt’ or ‘salwar kameez with waistcoat’ for girls.
