In a scene straight out of a sci-fi movie, astronauts returning from an extended space mission were greeted by an unexpected audience — dolphins!
NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, along with NASA’s Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, finally made it back to Earth after what was supposed to be an eight-day mission but turned into a nine-month-long journey.

Their return, aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, took place at 3:27 a.m. when the capsule safely splashed down off the coast of Florida. However, the real magic happened moments later, when a pod of dolphins appeared, gracefully circling the spacecraft as the recovery team worked to retrieve it.
The mesmerising sight added an unexpected touch of wonder to an already historic return. The astronauts, who had spent months in microgravity, were carefully assisted out of the capsule before being flown to Houston for a 45-day rehabilitation programme.
Their mission was filled with twists and challenges. Originally, they were supposed to test Boeing’s Starliner capsule on a brief journey. However, technical failures with the Starliner’s propulsion system left them stranded in space. The capsule returned to Earth without them, forcing NASA to rethink their return strategy.
In September, SpaceX was tasked with bringing them home. The Dragon spacecraft, typically carrying four astronauts, had to be reconfigured for this special mission. Finally, Crew-9 was replaced by Crew-10 at the International Space Station, and the long-awaited return was successfully completed.
