Bhubaneswar, March 2: The Met department Monday predicted light rain and thundershower at a few places in the state, adding there was a likelihood of thunder squalls and hailshaitorms accompanied by gusty surface winds reaching speeds up to 70 kmph over northern Orissa in the next 24 hours due to formation of a cyclonic system over North India.
Several parts of western Orissa received very light rain with thunderstorms Monday, with Jharsuguda recording a rainfall of 0.3mm.
Moreover, the current change in the weather system resulted in a sliding temperature over many parts of the state with the highest mercury of 36.5 degree Celsius recorded in Sonepur followed by 36.4 degree Celsius in Malkangiri in the past 24 hours.
“The ongoing system will continue to trigger light to moderate rain over a few parts of the state till March 4. Due to the heavy wind flow from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, a trough line has formed helping in triggering of rainfall. The system is very active over northern parts of the country, but Orissa won’t be affected much,” said Met director Sarat Sahu.
The weatherman added there will be a steady rise in temperature from March 6 over most parts of the state. “There will be a rise in temperature over most parts of the state from March 6 after this ongoing system weakens,” said Sahu.
The capital city and adjoining areas which witnessed heavy wind speeds reaching up to 30 kmph for the last couple of days may continue to witness the same for the next few days, the Met said, adding the capital city and adjoining areas will witness partly cloudy skies with minimal chances of rain or thundershower Tuesday.
