It is a moment in every wedding that is charged with emotions, as the father makes the ultimate sacrifice by giving away his beloved daughter into the care of another man, her husband, for a lifetime.
This is a holy ritual because by doing this bride’s parents attain Moksha. It is believed that the donation of the bride who is considered as the form of Goddess Lakshmi to the groom who is considered as Lord Vishnu will help the parents in attaining Moksha.
All the sins which were performed by the bride’s parents can be washed away if they perform the ritual of Kanyadaan during the wedding. Kanyadaan can be performed only by couple if parents are absent.
This takes place just before the mangal pheras. In this father of the bride places her right hand in that of the groom’s, which is known as hastamilap.
Along with this, betel leaves, betel nut, flowers, dry fruits, conch, gold and money are also placed in their hands. After this, holy water or milk is poured over their palms, as the priest recites holy verses. It means the groom promises to take care of their daughters, forever. After this bride leaves her family and accepts the new family and life of her husband and his family members.
