Rourkela, Dec 17: Joys of Julie, who was born without legs, Wednesday knew no bounds after the district administration assured her of financial assistance in form of a pair of prosthetic limbs so that she can lead a normal life.
Additional district magistrate K Sudarshan Chakraborty said he would talk to the collector Saturday and do the needful.
Satyaban Mishra, grandfather of the legless girl who brought her up in the absence of her parents, couldn’t believe the gesture of the administration. The administration took the decision after Oriya daily Dharitri published the struggling tale of the girl a few days back. Then, I&PR officer Jaydev Panigrahi handed Rs10,000, a token assistance, over to him. Later, Julie with her grandpa Satyaban went to Bhubaneswar-based Indo Life Artificial Centre to discuss about the possibility of having synthetic legs.
The authorities at the centre quoted Rs2,85 lakh to have such legs which would be imported ones. Besides, they also sent the same budget to the ADM. After getting the information from the artificial limb centre, the ADM called Satyaban and his granddaughter to hold discussions over the matter.
According to reports, Julie, at the age of two, lost her mother. Her younger sister Puja was one then. Their father opted for a second marriage after the death of their mother. The step-mother started torturing the two motherless toddlers. Finding it unbearable, Satyaban took the sisters under his fold and took the responsibility for their upbringing. His son Sapan Mishra also lent all support to the girls to stand on their feet. Julie cleared the matriculation examination in first class and started giving tuition to junior students to add to the earnings of her grandfather. From the money she earned from tuition, Julie got herself admitted to Government Autonomous College at Panposh in Plus II Commerce stream.
At present, she desires to fund her sister’s education and become a chartered accountant.
The administration’s decision to help out a differently-abled girl was appreciated across the Steel City.
