Kendrapara: A 30-year-old Dalit woman was shifted late Monday night to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after her condition deteriorated when a doctor allegedly cut a portion of her intestine during a family planning operation at a camp in Indupur.
Police sources said 32-year-old Ramesh Mallick of Endor village under Kendrapara Sadar police station lodged a complaint at Nikirai police station Monday night claiming that his wife Jharna Mallick was admitted at Indupur primary health centre (PHC) for sterilisation operation.
Indupur health centre in-charge Dr Pradip Kumar Das reportedly conducted the family planning operation but he informed Mallick that he failed to trace the fallopian tube and cut a portion of his wife’s intestine.
The doctor allegedly asked him to take his wife to the district head quarter hospital.
Umashankar Moharana, the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Pattamundai, stated that Nikirai police has received a complaint and registered a case (158/16 dated 19-12-16 under Section 337 and 338 of IPC) against Dr Das. Police have also started an inquiry in the matter.
Dr Das also confessed that he had cut about half inch of intestine instead of the fallopian tube.
But he also claimed that he had stitched back the intestine and referred the woman to the district headquarters hospital.
But, the doctor there advised to shift her to SCB.
Jharna is undergoing treatment at SCB and doctors say she will be discharged after 96 hours, claimed Mallick. Dr Das claimed the patient has been provided treatment free of cost and he was also monitoring her condition by staying back at SCB.
Kendrapara chief district medical officer (CDMO) Niranjan Swain stated that more than a dozen sterilisation operations were carried out at Indupur camp Monday.
He added that he will conduct an
investigation into the alleged case of medical negligence. PNN
