Debagada: A pregnant woman gave birth to a baby boy inside a 108 ambulance after floodwater blocked access to Kaliapal village in Barkote block of Debagada district Sunday morning.
Heavy rain lashed the Barkote area Saturday night, causing the Tankujura nullah near Kaliapal to swell. When Padmini Sabar, wife of Santosh Nayak of Kaliapal, went into labour, her family called a 108 ambulance.
However, the vehicle had to stop midway as about three feet deep water was fl owing over the bridge.
Padmini was taken by an autorickshaw to the other side of the bridge, while family members and relatives carried her across the flooded nullah.
The delay prevented her from reaching the hospital in time. After she was taken into the ambulance, she delivered a baby boy.
Emergency medical technician Kedar Sahu, driver Gautam Pradhan and attendant Sipun Sahu assisted Padmini and her newborn.
Both were later taken safely to the Barkote CHC, where their condition was reported to be stable.
