Baripada: A 50-year-old woman died and her husband was seriously injured after a wall of their kutcha house collapsed and fell on them during heavy rain in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, police said Tuesday.
The incident took place at Chhanua village under Badampahad police station Monday night when the couple were sleeping inside their home, a police officer said.
The deceased was identified as Hemalata Mahant. Her husband, who was seriously injured in the incident, was admitted to Rairangpur hospital, he said.The deceased’s body was sent for post-mortem, and further investigation is in progress, the officer of Badampahad police station said.
It is suspected that the wall of the couple’s kutcha house collapsed due to continuous heavy rainfall in the locality for the last three to four days, he said.
According to the IMD’s morning bulletin, Bahalda in Mayurbhanj district recorded extremely heavy rainfall of 273 mm, the maximum in the state during the 24 hours ended at 8.30 am Tuesday.
Rairangpur and Jamda in Mayurbhanj district received rainfall of 180 mm and 124 mm, respectively, the IMD said.
