Dhenkanal: In a shocking incident, a newlywed woman allegedly died by suicide four days after her marriage under mysterious circumstances. The incident took place at Bidabandh village under Sadar police limits in Dhenkanal district.

Jharana, daughter of Harihar Nayak of Kalanda village under Hindol police limits, married Madanmohan, elder son of Muralidhar Nayak of Bidabandh village February 17. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan with her saree Saturday. The incident has sent shock waves through the village.

Family members were busy finishing the rituals of the fourth day Saturday. Some of the family members knocked on the door of Jharana’s door but received no answer from inside.

Madanmohan and other family members broke open the door only to receive the shock of their lives. They found her hanging from the ceiling fan with her saree. She was immediately brought down and rushed to the Dhenkanal district headquarters hospital (DHH). But it was too late. The doctors there declared her received dead.

On being informed, police reached the DHH and recovered the body for postmortem. Registering a case (Case No-9/21), they have launched an investigation into the incident.

According to the deceased’s father, his daughter was treated at Hindol sub-divisional hospital for a neurological disorder when she was in Class X. She continued to behave abnormally at times after that.

“When we had the proposal for her, we chose to keep her health a secret betrween us. Without informing the groom’s family about her disease, we had married her off. None of her in-laws is responsible for her death,” said Harihara. He also gave it in writing to the police.

Regarding the incident, Madanmohan said he was at a loss as he couldn’t say anything why she had taken such an extreme step. “I had not even spoken to her. Saturday was our fourth night. But everything was torn asunder,” he said.
