Phulbani, May 29: In yet another incident of faulty tubectomy surgery, a tribal woman belonging to Baida in the block conceived even after undergoing that surgical interference. Currently she is seven-months pregnant.
The woman identified as Lalita Podha, who already has four children, underwent the surgery at the district headquarters hospital in November last year. She is now suffering from anaemia, malnutrition and severe pain in her abdomen. Due to extreme financial stringency, she cannot undergo proper treatment for her ailments. Her husband Balakrushna, a daily wager, expressed that he is unable to meet the daily family requirements and the treatment cost of her wife with the meager wage he gets.
Lalita said she has three sons and a daughter – Aarti (10), Haraprasad (7), Bibhu (5) and Jinu (3). Both she and her husband were worried about the future of their children as their income is very scanty. Later, they took the decision that Lalita should undergo tubectomy surgery.
With the help of an ASHA worker, she underwent a surgery at the Phulbani district headquarters hospital (DHH), after which, the fear of getting pregnant again vanished. However, a few days after the surgery, she experienced severe pain in her abdomen, Lalita added.
Even though she went for treatment several times for the pain, she was never aware that she was pregnant. When she came to know the matter, she was already in her advanced stage of pregnancy and it was impossible for her to go for an abortion, Lalita lamented.
His husband Balakrushna said Lalita became critical last month due to severe pain in the abdomen. She was admitted to the district headquarters hospital for two days. However, the pain continued even after treatment. Currently, he does not have enough money to arrange for further treatment of his wife. He blamed the doctor who conducted the surgery to be responsible for such condition of his wife.
In her reaction, ASHA worker Jhilli Digal said she was shocked to know that Lalita was pregnant even after family planning operation. Currently, she is being given iron tablets. She was taken to the DHH for a health check up to May 27. Even though she is at risk due to malnutrition and anaemia, measures are being taken to provide her better treatment.
CDMO Jatindra Kumar Patnaik said such mistake in tubectomy surgery should not occur. The situation would be observed and measures be taken accordingly. The affected woman would be compensated, he assured.
