Bhubaneswar, March 28: The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a woman Friday night in connection with kidnapping of a baby, a month after the child had gone missing from Bhubaneswar station’s waiting hall.
Police have, however, not yet been able to recover the kidnapped baby.
Rashmita Bagarti alias Rani maa alias Sabi, a resident of Mali Sahi, had allegedly kidnapped three-year-old Mohit Bamunia when his mother had dozed off while waiting for a connecting train at the waiting hall on February 26.
“Mamata Bamunia, the complainant, identified Sabi who was sitting beside her in the waiting hall. Other witnesses also identified her,” said inspector in-charge Saubhagya Swain.
Sabi was produced in court and sent to Jharpada jail. A case (28/2015) was registered under section 363 (kidnapping) of IPC.
Swain said Sabi was arrested after her mobile phone was tracked.
However, non-recovery of the child has put a cloud on the investigation. “We have tried to extract information from her but our efforts did not yield any result. She changed her statement constantly. Each time she would give us a new name on which we will start working, only to find that the person was only remotely related to the case,” Swain said.
Police raided several places at Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Charmal, Badmal, Khurda, Jatni, Bhadrak, Howrah and Kharagpur but failed to recover the baby.
Asked if the accused might have killed the baby or sold him to somebody else, Swain said, “We asked her that too, but she simply gives us a new name every time.”
Swain said mobile surveillance of some suspects is still on and he expects some lead from another accomplice who was detained.
