Baripada: Mystery shrouded the death of a 20-year-old woman and her nine-month-old son whose charred bodies were recovered from a house at Balimunduli village near Sadar here in Mayurbhnaj district late Monday night.
However, sources said, the woman was mentally-ill and immolated self after setting the baby son on fire.
The deceased was identified as Thakuramani Singh (20).
According to reports, Thakuramani had gone to a relative’s house with her infant son Monday. Sources said, the relatives went to a hospital late in the night after a kin of the family was affected of fever, leaving Thakuramani and her son alone in the house.
The family was shocked to find the charred bodies of the mother and son duo inside the house after their return from the hospital.
They alerted their neighbours who then informed the police. After getting information, police reached the spot, seized the bodies and sent them for post-mortem.
It is suspected that the woman, who was mentally ill, might have committed suicide by setting herself and her son on fire.
The investigation is on to find out the exact cause of the incident.
