Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, a poverty-stricken woman allegedly sold her four children to different people at different times as she could not raise the children.
The matter came to light after the Child Line officials rescued a three-month-old male child from Janata Nagar of Salia Sahi in Bhubaneswar Thursday. Sources said, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) received information about the incident and directed the Child Line to investigate it.
During investigation, it was found that a couple in Janata Nagar allegedly bought one of the children from the woman for unknown amount. After questioning the couple, they revealed that they had bought the child, following which the Child Line members rescued the child with the help of police.
The Child Line has lodged a complaint with Nayapalli police, who have detained the couple for further interrogation. It is learnt that the child has been sent to Subhadra Mahtab Seva Sadan for care and protection.
According to sources, the woman and her husband have been staying in the locality for the past five years and used to work as labourers. The couple allegedly sold their first twin girls five years ago as they were unable to take care of the babies.
Sources said the woman gave birth to another twins three months ago. But due to their poor economic condition, she allegedly sold her children to different persons a month ago.
A CWC member informed that the woman and her husband are absconding. He said, “The real reason behind such an act is questionable as one woman can’t sell her four children over poverty. It is yet to ascertain whether the allegations are true or not.”
A case under Section 80 and 81 of Juvenile Act has been registered and a probe is on to find out the accused woman and her husband,” added the CWC member.
