Jhumpura: In a shocking incident, a mentally unstable woman strangulated her four-month-old baby daughter and killed her neighbour woman by pushing her into a pond Sunday.
The heinous incident was reported from Baikunthapur under Baria police limits in Keonjhar Sunday. The incident has triggered panic among locals.
The accused woman has been identified as Laxmi Munda.
According to sources, Laxmi was mentally unsound and lived with her parents and four-month-old baby girl after being separated from her husband.
Over some reason, her mental illness increased Saturday evening. She spotted her neighbour woman, Basanti Munda going to a nearby pond to relieve herself. She slowly followed her and pushed Basanti into the pond from behind.
Later, she pounced upon her and pushed her into deep waters, resulting in her death.
As villagers raised an alarm, Laxmi came out of the water and ran straight to her house and locked her inside. She then spotted her baby girl sleeping and inhumanely strangulated the baby to death.
Villagers then detained Laxmi who was later arrested by police. A case was registered and the bodies were sent for autopsy. Preliminary probe revealed Laxmi was mentally unstable and committed the heinous crime.
The whole incident spread shock waves in the area.
