Nayagarh: A woman attempted suicide after killing her son and daughter at Laxmiprasad village of Shikharpur panchayat near Khandapara in Nayagarh district Sunday night.
The woman threw her children into a pond after giving them poison, reports said.
Ahalya Khuntia (35) along with her daughter Shivani (8) and son Sai (5) had gone to the backyard of her house at Laxmiprasad village in the evening. After giving poison to her children, Ahalya threw them into the pond. Later she consumed poison and jumped into the pond.
At 9 pm, some villagers saw the body of Shivani floating in the pond.
On being informed the fire personnel from Khandapara reached the spot and fished out the body. Later, Sai and Ahalya were rescued. While Sai and Ahalya were being rushed to the district headquarters hospital, Sai breathed his last. Ahalya is under treatment.
Ahalya’s brother Dillip Kumar Behera said his sister took the extreme step over some family dispute.
