Rourkela: In a boost to anti-Maoist operations, a woman Maoist cadre active in the Saranda forest surrendered before Rourkela police Monday.
The surrendered cadre, a Group B member of the Anmol team, laid down arms in the presence of Western Range DIG Brijesh Rai and the Rourkela SP at the police headquarters.
She was welcomed by officers with flowers and a shawl. The DIG said she would be provided all benefits under the government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy.
She initially worked as a logistics supplier for Maoists operating in the Saranda forests along the Odisha-Jharkhand border before being recruited into the outlawed outfit by a leader identified as Anmol, who was recently killed, police said.
“We got information about her intention to surrender and contacted her. She was disillusioned with Maoist ideology and disturbed by corruption and physical and mental harassment within the outfit,” police added.
According to officials, a total of 77 Maoists have surrendered before Odisha Police, while 23 others from the state have surrendered before Chhattisgarh Police.
