Woman murdered for dowry, four arrested

Nayagarh, Jan 21: A 21-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her in-laws for dowry at Champattipur under this block Wednesday.
Police arrested four persons including the victim’s father-in-law and mother-in-law. Victim Namita’s husband and brother-in-law are absconding.

Namita, daughter of Duhkhishyam Majhi of Kandhanuapalli married Kishore, son of Kashinath Biswal, two years ago. Dowry items worth Rs 7 lakh was given to the groom’s family at the time of marriage. But, Namita’s in-laws tortured her demanding more dowry.

Four days ago, Namita was asked to bring Rs 2 lakh. Her in-laws called Namita’s family over phone Wednesday and told them that she was unwell. Namita’s relatives, who were near Champattipur, reached her house minutes after getting the call. They found the door locked from inside.

After a long time, the door was opened and her relatives found the body lying on a cot. Her in-laws claimed she committed suicide by hanging.However, Namita’s relatives lodged a complaint with police alleging it was case of murder. Police reached the spot and arrested the accsued. Post-mortem of the body will be conducted Thursday, police said.
