Jajpur: A woman had to pay with her life for opposing illegal sale of liquor at Barei village under Mangalpur police limits in Jajpur district.
A severely injured Lakshmi Jena breathed her last while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack late Monday night.
According to a source, Bijay Jena of Barei village was selling liquor illegally. But Lakshmi had been opposing the selling of liquor in the village. She had even asked Bijay to refrain from the illegal trade. She had lodged a report at the police station seeking action against the bootlegger.
Acting on her complaint, police asked Bijay to close down his illegal trade of selling liquor and warned him of action if he goes on with his business.
Bijay had since been harbouring a grudge against her. He attacked her with stones and sticks Monday morning.
A critically injured Lakshmi was rescued and immediately rushed to the Jajpur district headquarters hospital. Later, she was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after her condition deteriorated.
While undergoing treatment, she succumbed the same night.
Family members lodged a complaint against Bijay at the police station on the basis of which he was arrested. A detailed probe is underway, it was learnt.
