Puri: A 10-year-old boy was poisoned to death allegedly by his mother while his sibling is battling for life at SCB Medical College and Hospital following the alleged inhuman act by the woman.
According to Baselisahi police, preliminary investigations have revealed that the woman tried to kill her two sons by serving poison-laced food Monday evening following a family dispute.
Sources said, Basanti Parida (38), her husband Amin Parida and their two sons – Babula (12) and Chagala (10) – were residing in Paikasahi of Mangalahat. Amin is a daily wager while Basanti is a housewife. According to neighbours, the couple used to quarrel frequently over family and financial issues.
Basanti alleged that Amin would usually come home drunk and beat her up late at night. A family feud ensued Sunday evening after which Basanti was apparently upset.
Basanti allegedly added poison to the cooked food and served it to her sons around 10pm Monday. She also consumed the food and went to bed along with the children at around 11pm when Amin was away.
It was around 1am when Chagala started vomiting after which Basanti and Babula also started throwing up.
Hearing the groans, neighbours reached Amin’s residence and rushed the trio to district headquarters hospital where Chagala died during treatment. Basanti and Babula have been shifted to SCB as their condition worsened, said the sources.
Police registered a case of unnatural death and sent Chagala’s body for postmortem.
