Chhatrapur: A woman and her son were killed when a two-wheeler they were travelling by was hit by an over-speeding truck on national highway near Chamakhandi Square under this block in Ganjam district Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Manik Maharana and her son Ganesh Maharana of Kaliabali village under Chamakhandi police limits.
Sources said, the incident occurred while the mother and son were crossing the NH on a two-wheeler. The killer truck hit them from rear after the driver lost balance on the wheels. Locals rescued the mother and son in critical conditions and rushed them to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. However, both of them succumbed to the injuries during treatment.
The incident spread tension at the spot for a while, as angry locals thrashed the truck driver and handed him over to police. The vehicle was seized and a probe was launched. Later, the bodies were handed over to family members after autopsy.
