Enthusiasts from across the state visited Regional Museum of Natural History and Regional Science Centre on the occasion of World Museum Day
BHUBANESWAR: World Museum day was celebrated in the city amidst much gaiety and pomp. Regional science centre and Regional museum of Natural history celebrated the day with various camps while State Museum remained closed due to the damage caused during Fani.
State Museum will open after May 23. Earlier in the day, Regional Science Centre celebrated the day with summer camps for children of diverse age. Interacting with Orissa Post, Haraprasad Mishra, project coordinator, RSC, said, “Everyone must visit the museum to understand his or her own history and glory. All I believe and say is that science should be fun and it should be understood to be enjoyed by kids. The good effect of museum definitely drives a community to excel in life.”
On similar lines, a summer vacation programme was organised at Regional Museum of Natural History from May 16 to 22 in two categories i.e. Green Cubs (students born between 1st April 2006 and 31st March 2009) and Green Teens (students born between 1st April 2002 and 31st March 2005) to create interest for conservation in young minds, to orient children to understand nature and environment where they live and to explore nature and spend few days learning about nature in natural environment.
During the summer vacation programme, children were taught to grow with nature and respect the elements of nature around them. They were taught about various green gaols to follow in their life for a greener planet.
A scientist Gaurav said, “We disseminate tit bits of information through experiments. Topic for the programme is mainly on Air Pollution. There will be extra activities like mask making, painting, pottery, lectures and discussions among others. Apart from this, children will take to the field visit to learn about environment, nature and wildlife. Hobbies and skills are also being developed through induction. Children also learn to present themselves with confidence in front of a large audience.”
A museum enthusiast Arundhati Garabadu said, “After Fani, I was getting bored. Hence, instead of visiting malls and movie complexes in Bhubaneswar, I thought why not visit the museum of Natural history where past relics are displayed. I am delighted to have a tour of the museum with my parents.”
Chitralekha Dwivedi who accompanied her son Yash to a Robotics Camp at Regional Science Centre felt that children should not only discover science, but also witness various discoveries by scientists that are being stored inside the centre.”
