Bhubaneswar: Young Veterans Club entered the semifinals of the IIIrd Puspalata Garabadu Memorial Masters cricket tournament thrashing Scan Sporting by nine wickets in the quarterfinals at the Town Club Ground here, Monday.
Put into bat first, Scan rode on a half century by Mohan Sahu (64) to score 138 for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs. Ashis Patnaik (4/13) and Soumitra Sethy (3/25) bowled well for Young Veterans.
In reply, an unbeaten 112-run second wicket partnership between skipper Ranjan Nayak (64 n o) and Narayan Moharana (50 n o) helped Young Veterans pull off an emphatic win in 17.1 overs. Ashis of Young Veterans was adjudged man of the match for his bowling.
Tuesday’s match: Mukteswar Cricket Club vs Saheed Sporting.
Double victory
Balasore registered double victories against Sundargarh and Keonjhar in different matches of the State Level Schools’ cricket tournament at different grounds here, Monday.
In the first match Balasore defeated Sundargarh by four wickets and in the second match they defeated Keonjhar with identical margin.
In other matches Bhubaneswar, Baragarh and Cuttack defeated Nabarangpur, Bhadrak and Jharsuguda respectively.
Orissa face defeat
Hosts Orissa were looking down the barrel against Jharkhand on the second day of their four-day match in the Cooch Behar Trophy cricket tournament at the Vikash Ground in Bargarh, Monday.
In reply to Jharkhand’s first innings total of 276, Orissa were bundled out for a meagre with Binit Kumar Mohanty (16) being the only one to offer some resistance with the bat. Sushant Mishra (4/24) turned out to be the wrecker-in-chief for the visitors.
Jharkhand did not enforce the follow on and in their second innings 106 for three, an overall lead of 286 runs.
