Daringbadi: A youth arrested on the charge of throttling his girlfriend to death at Kirikuti in Kandhamal district reportedly attempted to end his life inside the jail Monday.
The accused youth was identified as Gargarin Nayak. Police also detained Nayak’s father for interrogation. The deceased girl was identified as Pranita Parichha, daughter of Subala Pariccha of Simanbadi.
Nayak reportedly attempted to commit suicide inside the jail by repeatedly bashing his head against the commode inside his cell’s lavatory, resulting in critical injuries. Police rescued him and admitted to Daringbadi community health centre (CHC). Doctors recommended a CT scan on Nayak’s head. Police shifted him to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur to conduct the scan due to lack of facilities at the CHC. His condition is now stable, doctors said.
On learning the incident, Balliguda SDPO Surendranath Murmu visited the spot and launched an inquiry by visiting the scene of the murder. Daringbadi IIC Baba Shankar Sharaf, ASI Edu Kishore Tripathy and R. Bhima Rao Reddy were present along with Murmu during the investigation.
Murmu seized Nayak’s motorbike and his clothes for examination. Police Monday brought several locals to the police station and interrogated them.
Pranita was in a relationship with Nayak for the last two years and later the two got married in a civil ceremony. However, Nayak’s family refused to accept Pranita as she belonged to another religion. They said they would be boycotted by villagers if they accepted her as their daughter-in-law, and said they wanted more dowry in order to do so.
After Pranita insisted on living together, Nayak and his family planned to kill her. Nayak took her to his village one day and strangled her to death with her own scarf. Then, he took the body and hanged it from a tree in a bid to disguise the death as a case of suicide, IIC Sharaf said.
Pranita’s family accused Nayak and his family members of murdering their daughter. Police registered a case of murder over Subala’s written complaint and arrested Nayak and detained his father. PNN
