Puri: A youth was shot dead and two men were injured in a clash that erupted over a minor dispute during a wedding procession at Uttarani Gauda Sahi under Chandanpur police limits Thursday night.
Trinath Nayak (24), a decorator, and Krushna Chandra Swain (48) received bullet injuries and were rushed to the district headquarters hospital (DHH), where Nayak was declared dead on arrival, said police. To retaliate the firing, a few people from the groom’s side abducted and assaulted a man, Abinash Senapati, at a local club. On being informed, a police team came and rescued Senapati and admitted him to the DHH.
Police arrested four men – Shiva Narayan Subuddhi and Jambeswar Pradhan of Kanthapur, Amit Kumar Chanduka of Suarsahi, and Ashok Kumar Joshi of Dolamandap Sahi – in connection with the attacks. Police also seized a gun, two cartridges and three two-wheelers from the accused.
The violence occurred when a procession by the groom’s side from Charinala reached Uttarani Gauda Sahi around 10.30 pm Thursday, said police. Subuddhi, Pradhan and three of his friends, all from the bride’s side, asked the men in the procession to continue the DJ music for some more time after the procession ended. When the latter refused, a scuffle ensued between Subuddhi and the men in the groom’s procession. Enraged over the refusal, Pradhan opened fire at the groom’s procession, said police.
A police team led by Chandanpur police inspector in-charge Subash Chandra Panda and his Sadar police counterpart Bishnucharan Pati arrested Subuddhi and the other accused from a community hall at Kanthapur.
