Padmapur: In a shocking incident, a youth trying to save a relative girl student from drowning was swept away by currents in a river at Haripur in Sahada panchayat of Bhadrak district Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Suryakant Barik (23), a resident of Baulapal under Tihidi block.
Reports said Suryakant had come to a relative’s house at Haripur Friday.
In the evening, the 13-year-old daughter of Kailash Barik, a resident of Haripur, was returning on her bicycle from tuition classes in Andarai bazaar. Suryakant was with her. The girl however, fell off a bridge into river Dhanutri.
Suryakant immediately dived into the river to save her, but was swept away. Locals managed to save the girl after an intense search operation at night, while the youth remained traceless.
Suryakant’s father lodged a complaint with Sabrang outpost police. The police along with fire brigade searched for him till late in the night. Finally, the body was fished out at Balidasahi. Police seized the body and sent it for post-mortem.
