Bhanjanagar, Nov 5: Miscreants Wednesday killed a 19-year-old youth by slicing his throat near a pond at Singipur village under Jagannathprasad police limits in Ganjam district. He was identified as Jugal Naik, son of Gauranga Naik of this town.
Police arrived at the spot late in night and started an investigation. The reason of the killing and the identity of the killer were yet to be ascertained. Police registered a murder case and sent the body for post-mortem to the local sub-divisional hospital Thursday morning. Four of the deceased’s relatives have been detained in this connection, the police said.
Tension mounted on the hospital premises as the post-mortem couldn’t be conducted as Bijay Kumar Panda, the SDMO of the hospital was undergoing treatment under the supervision of Vigilance officials at Berhampur.
Panda became critical after he was arrested by the sleuths on bribery charges Tuesday. Later, the higher authorities intervened in the matter and the autopsy was performed eight hours late.
According to reports, since childhood Jugal was staying with Chhabila Naik, the elder brother of his father who resides in Panchabhuti area of Singipur. Someone Wednesday brutally sliced his throat while he went near a village pond for bath. The killer fled the scene after dumping a knife on the spot.
Alerted, Chhabila’s family member picked up the body and brought it to their house. Jugal’s father Gauranga came to know about the incident in evening and informed the police. The police detained four persons who had picked up the body from near the pond for interrogation.
