Bhubaneswar, Dec 13: At least three persons were burnt alive Saturday as the car they were aboard caught fire after a collision with a sand-laden truck on the outskirts of
the city.
The incident took place in the wee hours near Malipada Square on National Highway 16. The victims hailed from Ganjam district and were returning home after attending a wedding in the city. The four-wheeler caught fire immediately after the collision and the trapped trio was burnt alive.
The deceased, all aged above 50-years, identified as Samir Das, Himanshu Panigrahi and Dilip Rath, belonged to Nilakantha Nagar in Bijipur area of Berhamapur, police said.
The three were working as engineers in the state Irrigation department. The bodies were sent to district headquarters hospital at Khurda for autopsy.
The sand which the truck carried was scattered all over the road affecting vehicular movement for three hours.
On information, fire-fighters from Khurda reached the spot and doused the flames. Jankia police with the help of locals cleared the mangled vehicles from the road.
