Bhubaneswar: Multi-talented Orissa sportsperson Anupama Swain bagged two gold medals and a silver medal Wednesday evening at the Asian Classic Powerlifting Championships at Alappuzha in Kerala. However, the other Orissa powerlifter, Pradip Patra missed out on a medal, finishing fifth in the men’s 66kg category.
Anupama lifted 132.5kg in squat, 65kg in bench press and 127.5kg in deadlift, with an overall of 325kg in the women’s 52kg segment to two yellow metals in squat and overall lift and the silver in bench press. Singapore’s L Lee and A Koyaka of Philippines bagged silver and bronze medals respectively – both lifting a total of 317.5kg each.
Anupama who is working in Orissa Police, is an international medallist in karate. Besides that, the Utkal Karate School student is also a National Games medallist in wrestling, mixed martial arts (MMA) and sports climbing etc.
Brilliant Bikash show
Bikash Naik (5/35) bowled brilliantly Thursday to help Orissa bowl out Jharkhand for 177 in their first innings of the Vijay Merchant Trophy U-16 cricket tournament at Jamshedpur. In reply, the visitors were 14 for one at stumps on the opening day, with Anwesh Tripathy (13 batting) at the crease.
Opting to bat, Jharkhand openers Pramit Singh (39, 70b, 7×4) and Aryan Hooda (27, 72b, 5×4) gave the side a good start and put on 68 runs. However, once they left, the hosts lost their way and lost the remaining eight wickets for 109 runs. Skipper Sahil Raj (53, 105b, 10×4) was the only one to offer some resistance.

Subhra Nirjharani Swain will lead a 15-member Orissa squad squad for the U-16 Women’s One-East Zone League, to be played at Agartala December 14-22. Orissa will face hosts Tripura (Dec 14), Jharkhand (Dec 18), Bengal (Dec 20) and Assam (Dec 22) respectively.

Tourney postponed
The Pushpalata Garabadu Masters Cricket tournament has been postponed due to cyclone and rain threats, informed organising Town Club secretary Manoj Mohapatra, Thursday.
Notably, the nine-team tourney was scheduled to start December 8. However, the organisers will now host it, December 15-24.
