Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, a 55-year-old woman, Subhadra Pradhan, was beaten to death by two goons when she went to rescue her son from them Thursday night at Pradhansahi slum in Nayapalli here.
The accused goons, identified as Madhab Pradhan and Santosh Patra, are neighbours of the deceased.
According to locals, due to some problem with the electrical wiring, power went out of the house of the accused duo (Pradhan and Patra) in the fateful night. The two then called Prakash, son of the deceased, to fix the problem, which he did. However, after some time, the wire again snapped and the accused persons again approached Prakash.
At that point, Prakash was having his dinner and refused to go there saying it was too late and that he would do the work in the morning. But Pradhan and Patra started taking him forcefully. When Prakash objected, they held his neck, pulled him up and started beating him mercilessly.
Seeing her son being attacked, Subhadra, a heart patient, rushed to his rescue. Even after seeing Prakash’s mother, the duo didn’t stop. Instead, they started hitting her too. Pradhan and Patra kicked Subhadra repeatedly on her stomach, resulting in her death on the spot.
While this dance macabre was being played out, personnel of the Commissionerate Police were nowhere to be seen.
After the incident, the duo fled the spot but was arrested from the railway station 18 hours later. They would be produced in a court Saturday.
