Rayagada, March 2: Police in Rayagada Monday claimed to have busted an inter-state fake currency racket and arrested four persons in this connection.
Police unearthed the racket after getting inputs from some residents of the area, superintendent of police K Shiva Subramani said at a press conference here.
Subramani said some residents of the area spotted two men trying to exchange fake notes with original notes near a bus-stand here Monday morning. They informed the police, following which police reached the spot and detained the two men, identified as Nala Sampath of Venkatpuram village of Telangana and Singarupu Bangaria of Badarupalsa village of Andhra Pradesh.
Police seized nine fake notes of `1,000 denomination and five counterfeit notes of `500 denomination from Nala. Police also seized seven fake notes of `1,000 denomination and four counterfeit notes of `500 denomination from Singarupu.
Police registered a case under section 489(c) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested the two. While interrogating them, the police learnt of an inter-state fake currency racket.
Nala and Singarupou told police that a man named TP Murali Raju of Pukali village under Pottangi police limits in Koraput district had been supplying fake notes to them, following which a police team went to Pukali village and arrested Murali. The team also seized a colour printer, a colour cartridge, a mobile phone and some other items from him.
Murali told police during interrogation about another person, Kaka Dipak, who was also involved in the racket. Police then nabbed Kaka Dipak of Rudraram village under Bijapur police limits in Chhattisgarh from a hotel in Semiliguda. Police claimed that Dipak, a cattle trader, had been exchanging fake notes with original notes while doing his business. Police also seized two fake notes of `1,000 denomination, two notes of `500 denomination and four notes of `100 denomination from him.
The SP said police seized fake notes with a face value of `28,900 and four mobile phones from the four arrested persons. Police would take all these persons on remand and further interrogate them, he said.
Sub-divisional police officer Y Jagannath Rao, Rayagada police station inspector in-charge Kapileswar Behera and sub-inspector Nalini Das, were also present at the press conference.
