Bhubaneswar: Keeping the upcoming general elections in mind, the Commissionerate Police (CP) instructed gun licence holders in the city to deposit their firearms at the local police stations as soon as possible.
The step was taken to thwart any illegal and wrongful use of the firearms during elections. DCP Anup Sahu also informed the media that police will take strong action against the licencees who fail to deposit their guns, revolvers and 12 rounds bore guns. He said that local police stations in city have been sending notices to the persons who have not deposited their guns yet. They are being instructed to deposit the same within the next seven days.
However, he said that police will take into consideration important situations like serious threat to life.
All 1,702 licence holders have been asked to deposit their fire arms. Meanwhile, till now 580 persons have deposited their revolvers and guns, while 1,122 are yet to abide by the instructions. As per reports, 58 fire arms deposited at Khandagiri police station, 55 at Laxmisagar police station, and 53 at Nayapalli police station, 44 at Badagada police station and 48 at the Jatani police station.
The CP have arrested 684 accused under NBW, held seven persons on the charges of involvement in illegal firearm and seized 10 pistols along with 16 rounds of ammunition from February 1 to March 11. Also, 137 drug peddlers were arrested by cops in 8 NDPS cases during the said period.
