New Delhi: MC Mary Kom once more displayed her class with the gloves to claim a gold medal, but the Indian men’s juggernaut was denied a complete sweep by traditional powerhouses Cuba and Uzbekistan on the concluding day of the India Open boxing tournament, here Thursday.
Mary Kom won against Filipino Josie Gabuco 4-1 in the 48kg class for women. Pwilao Basumatary (64kg) was another winner on the day when she defeated Thailand’s Sudaporn Seesondee 3-2.
The Assam boxer is a regular in the national camp and had claimed a gold medal at the 2015 Nation’s Cup in Serbia. Her statemate, Lovlina Borgohain claimed the welterweight (69kg) gold, getting the better of compatriot Pooja.
However, L Sarita Devi (60kg) had to settle for silver after losing to Finland’s Olympic bronze- medallist Mira Potkenon 2-3.
In the men’s segment, Sanjeet (91kg) picked up India’s first gold of the day when he upstaged Uzbekistan’s Sanjar Tursunov 3-2.
National champion Manish Kaushik (60kg) also bagged the yellow metal after he was given a walkover by his Mongolian rival Battumur Misheelt, who pulled out owing to a cut sustained on his forehead during his semifinal bout.
Among others, Satish Kumar (+91kg), Dinesh Dagar and Devanshu Jaiswal (81kg) settled for silver.
Former World Championship silver medallist Saweety Boora (75kg) also had to be content with a second-place finish against Cameroon’s Essaine Clotilde.
