Bhubaneswar, July 5: Well-known Sambalpuri song, Rangabotire, which created a musical sensation in the seventies, has found itself embroiled in legal wrangle after MTV Coke studio recorded it as ‘Rangabati Returns’.
As the song goes viral over social media, its lyricist Mitrabhanu Gountia and music director Prabhudatta Pradhan have moved the court alleging copyright violation. A suit of `1 crore has been filed against the organisation and persons involved in remaking of the number. The petitioners contended that the song had distorted the lyric and composition while remaking the song without obtaining their permission.
Sagar Pradhan, the lyricist’s lawyer, has sent legal notices to the Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd, Hindustan Coca Cola Holdings Pvt Ltd, Viacome 18 Media Pvt Ltd and singers Sona Mohapatra, Ram Sampath and Rituraj Mohanty. The petitioners have also contended before the court that the remake version of the number should be taken off air.
Sona Mohapatra’s manager Avneet declined to give any details about the legal notice. “It’s a Sunday and I am not in a condition to tell you anything about it. From our side, there is no comment,” Avneet told Orissa Post.
Meannwhile, the 6.58 minute-long video song has attracted 4.54 lakh viewers on Youtube and already been shared on social media. Rangabati, originally recorded in the mid 70s by singers Jitendra Haripal and Krishna Patel, continues to be popular among people.
