Bhubaneswar, June 29: The 22nd Asian Athletics Championship is set to glorify Orissa’s art and culture. It’s going to witness the beauty of exquisite Orissa handloom. The athletes and delegates will be greeted with Kotpad and Tussar stoles from Gopalpur. Orissa Textile Department held a meeting, chaired by textile and handloom minister Snehangini Chhuria, recently to decide on the souvenirs. Sources revealed that officials decided to present the filigree work of Konark wheel as mementos to the participants. “We have prepared a list of items, which would be given to the participants and winners of the 22 Asian Athletics Championship. Some of the best handicraft and handloom items have been selected for the same. Utkalika and Boyanika have been asked to provide all the
items,” additional secretary of textile and handloom department, Raja Parija said. The event will also witness a display of the intricate designs of Ikat on Sambalpuri sarees. The placard bearers will march past the Kalinga Stadium during the opening and closing ceremonies, donning the quintessential Sambalpuri weaves. “There will be a placard bearer with the contingent of each team. They will be all draped in Sambalpuri sarees. We have asked Boyanika to give us around 50 Sambalpuri sarees,” said Balwant Singh, in-charge of Asian Athletics Championship. However, Boyanika is yet to finalise on the pieces to be used at the sporting event. “It will be finalised soon as the final orders’ list has not been made yet,” said a Boyanika official.
