Odagaon: In a shocking incident, a 33-year-old woman reportedly poisoned her two minor sons including a four-day-old baby to death before killing herself by consuming the same poison over a family feud at Gandhinagar under Sadar police limits in Nayagarh district Friday.
The deceased was identified as Banbasi Sahu (33), her sons Mrutunjay Sahu (11) and a four-month-old baby. The horrific incident spread shockwaves in the area. The woman died while being taken to the district headquarters hospital while her sons who were battling for their lives breathed their last on their way to SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Banbasi, daughter of Suresh Chandra Sahu of Odagaon Sasan Nuasahi was married to Laxmidhar Sahu (38) of Godasahi 12 years ago. Laxmidhar was a tailor in profession and owned a tailor shop near Odagaon Chhak. He also had opened a lassi shop recently and was doing good business.
On the fateful day, Laxmidhar as usual left for work in the morning. Meanwhile, Banbasi over reasons best known to her fed her sons with milk mixed with poison before consuming it herself.
On hearing their screams, the grandmother rushed to the spot and found the three lying on the ground and battling for lives. She alerted her neighbours who helped her to admit the three to Odagaon government hospital. However, Banbasi died mid-way while the minors were shifted to district headquarters hospital after preliminary treatment.
For further treatment, the doctors referred the minors to SCB Medical College and Hospital. However, the two died while undergoing treatment, Odagaon IIC Ramchandra Sahu said.
Preliminary investigation revealed that it was the fallout of a family feud. The couple suspected each other of infidelity creating a rift between the two. Earlier, Laxmidhar had been arrested on charge of assaulting Banbasi. Later, the matter was settled amicably and the couple started living together.
However, the rift continued and the two were often seen fighting with each other. Police detained Laxmidhar for interrogation.
The bodies were seized and sent for post-mortem. A case was registered and investigation is on.
