Bhubaneswar, April 19: One person was killed and three critically injured after a truck hit the car in which they were travelling to Puri on a pilgrimage near Power House square in the city.
The driver of the car — Manoranjan Sahoo, 30, a resident of Salepur in Cuttack — died on the spot. The three injured persons are undergoing treatment at a private hospital. They have been identified as Nirmal Bhattacharya, 59, a resident of Ghaziabad, and Amitabh Sarkar, 59, and Prabir Roy Choudhary, 56, of Kolkata. All three were executive directors operations, finance and transport and shipping, respectively of the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL).
The three were in the city Saturday to attend an official meeting and were staying at Trident hotel. “Their plan was to have a ‘darshan’ at Puri early in the morning before taking a flight back to Kolkata at 9 am,” said Purna Chandra, investigating officer at Capital police station.
The three left the hotel in a car at 4:30 am Sunday.
However, they had not gone far when a truck (OR 02/BC 6971) laden with sand hit the vehicle head on near Power House, leaving the car mangled.
Bhattacharya is said to be in coma.
The truck driver has fled the scene.
According to 2013 NCRB data, a total of 4,062 people have died in road accident in the state in 2013 in the state.
