Jeypore: At least 13 girls from the Vejahandi UPS Nodal School hostel in Kundura block of Koraput district had to be hospitalised after being afflicted with diarrhoea Sunday. They were admitted to the district headquarters hospital in Jeypore for treatment.
In the past three days, a total of 24 students from the hostel have been affected with diarrhoea, though the cause remains unclear.
Reports said three days ago, nine Class X girls first developed symptoms. They were treated at the Kundura community health centre, where six recovered and the other three were shifted to the district headquarters hospital. Four more girls fell ill and were treated with medicines in the hostel Saturday.

Meanwhile, 13 more girls from Classes VI, VII and X developed diarrhoea and were shifted to the district headquarters hospital Sunday, hostel warden Tanushree Jena said. The affected girls are undergoing treatment and no symptom other than diarrhoea has been reported so far, she added.
It is apprehended that the numbers of affected might go up with the disease spreading and showing no signs of decline. The hostel with a capacity of 100 seats, which accommodates students from Classes IV to X, has now come under medical watch. A health team has reached the hostel and conducted checkups on other boarders.
