Narsinghpur, Feb 10: Two persons were rendered critical after miscreants shot at them on the wedding altar during solemnisation of a marriage at Ranasinghpur in this block of Cuttack district late Monday night.
The victims were identified as the bride’s father Pranab Sahu and the groom’s brother-in-law Babuli Sahu of Rangadaba. The accused fled the scene in the cover of darkness as the victims dropped down in a pool of blood.
Panicked people ran helter-skelter for safety with sounds of cries renting the air. The incident has triggered shockwaves in the region.
The incident occurred when the priest was chanting hymns to solemnise the marriage of Pranab’s daughter Deepanjali with Naba Sahu’s son Bunu Sahu of Tirikipasi under Kanpur police limits with relatives surrounding the altar from all sides. Family member alleged the bullets were fired from a dark place behind the altar.
While a bullet hit Pranab on his right shoulder another hit Babuli on his left hand. Family members first rushed them to Narsinghpur hospital where they were administered primary treatment and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as their condition remained critical due to presence of bullets in their bodies.
On being informed, Narsinghpur police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Later, the marriage was solemnised in the presence of inspector-in-charge Harmohan Nayak and other police officials.
According to latest reports available, the two victims have been administered treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital but doctors are yet to operate upon their wounds with the bullets remaining in their bodies.
Police registered a case and launched a manhunt to nab the accused. Preliminary inquiry suggested that the accused might have carried out the act out of past enmity with the bride’s
father. A case was registered in
this connection and further investigations are on.
