Balugaon: Two persons were killed while six others rendered critical in a major road mishap at Paikakusadiha Chhak near Balugaon bypass on National Highway-16 in Khurda district Wednesday. Sanatan Maharana (60) and Kesab Paikaray (45) were killed while the injured were identified as Indramani Baral, Santosh Barik and the vehicle helper.
Sources said the mishap occurred after an over-speeding tomato-laden truck hit a gas tanker parked alongside the road. As a result, both the vehicles overturned on the
highway and rammed into
a tea stall killing two and critically injuring three persons, sources said.
Police seized the bodies and sent them for post-mortem. A case was registered and the injured admitted to a local
hospital.
According to police, Barik as usual opened his tea stall early Wednesday morning. After a while, a gas tanker halted there for tea.
Meanwhile, an overloaded tomato-laden truck rammed into the vehicle after the driver lost balance on the wheels. Both the vehicles overturned and rammed into Santosh’s tea stall. Two customers Sanatan and Kesab, who were having tea in the stall, tried in vain to escape from the spot. They were crushed under the vehicles leading to their death on the spot while three others were left injured.
Locals rescued the injured and admitted them to Balugaon government hospital. Santosh was shifted to a hospital in Bhubaneswar. Balugaon IIC Manjulata Khadanga reached the spot and took stock of the situation.
Irate over the incident, locals placed the bodies and staged a demonstration. Local tehsildar Swetha Kumar Dash reached the spot and pacified the mob. PNN
