Mumbai: The nexus between film personalities and cricket bookies once more came to the fore after actor-producer Arbaaz Khan was summoned by the Thane police in connection with an IPL-2018 betting scam.
Police recently had busted a betting ring and arrested 42-year-old bookie Sonu Jalan. The actor’s name cropped up during interrogation of Jalan who allegedly said that Arbaaz had placed huge bets on matches played during IPL-XI. Police now want to question Arbaaz on his alleged involvement.
According to a national news channel, Arbaaz lost around `2.8 crore while betting on IPL games. The channel reported that Arbaaz owed that amount to Jalan for which he was getting threat calls.
The Thane crime branch anti-extortion cell (AEC) said that the actor has been summoned to appear before it Saturday to ascertain ‘his role in the betting racket which shall be confirmed once his statement is recorded’. Senior AEC inspector Pradip Sharma said Friday that there is ‘no doubt’ that Jalan and Arbaaz knew one another.
Sharma said that a diary has been recovered from Jalan which had the names of over 100 bookies, celebrities and builders. “Jalan had arranged a match-fixing meeting at Dubai. The celebrity was also present there. We are probing to know which match was fixed and who were involved,” Sharma said.
