Udayagiri/Naugaon, May 8: Three families were rendered homeless in separate fire mishaps in Kandhamal and Jagatsinghpur districts late Monday night.
In the first instance, families of Bansidhar Swain and Manguli Charan Swain of Nayasingada village under Naugaon block in Jagatsinghpur district were left without shelters following a massive fire breakout Monday night.
Locals tried to douse the flames, but the fire engulfed both the houses due to the gusty surface wind. Later, a fire brigade team was pressed in to service to douse the flames. The local tehsildar visited the village Tuesday morning and assured necessary compensation.
Similarly, the family of Krushia Pradhan was rendered homeless as the house caught fire at Nilungia village under G Udayagiri block in Kandhamal district.
According to sources, Pradhan’s daughter was supposed to get married in a few days. So, the family had stockpiled valuables and household items for dowry. Unfortunately, all the items were reduced to ashes in the fire.
Before spreading of fire to other houses, villagers alerted the fire officials who arrived on time and doused the flames. Udayagiri tehsildar Dharanidhar Behera along with revenue officials reached the village and took stock of the loss. He facilitated relief for the family and assured to provide further assistance after an estimation of the losses. While no exact reason of the fire was ascertained, locals suspected the fire broke out due to short-circuit in the house.
