Koraput, Feb 16: The apathetic attitude of the district administration has resulted in a family of a police constable who was killed by Maoists in Koraput district waiting for the last three years to get a job from the government under a rehabilitation scheme.
Balaji Takri, who was posted at Machhakunda police station under the district, was gunned down by rebels near a Shiva temple July 7, 2011.
Three days after his death, then inspector general of police (south-western range) Soumendra Priyadarshi had handed over a cheque of `8 lakh to his family.
Priyadarshi had also given them an assurance that the government would give them a piece of land in an urban area and also provide a job to one family member.
The deceased constable’s father had later met the then superintendent of police and urged him to give the job to his younger daughter.
He had also submitted all required documents for this.
However, the administration is yet to provide the job to the girl though three years have passed since the constable was killed.
Takri’s father had approached officials concerned several times during the period but this did not yield any result. He had even met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in November and sought his intervention in the matter.
The constable’s father had also met the home secretary January 2 and urged him to look into the issue. However, no step has been taken to address his concern.
The state government had introduced a policy a few years ago under which financial assistance, a piece of land and a job to one member of a family would be provided if any police official is killed in an attack by naxalites.
However, because of the negligence of officials concerned, the families of many martyrs’ are still waiting to get such benefits from the government.
The Koraput superintendent of police, Charan Singh Meena, said he would look into the matter and take action soon.
