Berhampur: A rogue simian has unleashed a reign of terror in Old Berhampur area after biting 30 persons, a report said.
Among the injured, health condition of 10 persons are stated to be critical while the rest have been discharged after treatment. The animal is stated to have bit over six persons last Sunday.
Some of the injured persons were identified as Jagnya Sethi (14) in Prahllad Nagar, Raj Sekhar Behera (28), Ratikanta Mukhi (28), Jyotirmayee Hati (24) and Pabana Nayak (30) in Pandav Nagar.
Things have come to such a pass that people have demanded the monkey to be shot as they have stopped going outside in fear of the animal.
Some youths in the area are carrying lathis and keeping a close watch on the movement of the animal. The animal has kept the locals and forest officials on tenterhooks as all efforts by them to catch it have failed to yield any result. This has sparked resentment among the residents.
Locals alleged that the animal arrived in the area a month back but none thought that it will rob their peace of mind. It is not sparing anyone whomsoever it sees on the road and straying inside houses of people and biting them even at night.
They alleged the animal has bit persons in Pandav Nagar, Martha Peta Sahi, Radhakrushna Sahi, Tota Sahi, Ganesh Nagar, Lakshminrusingha Sahi and Prahllad Nagar in Old Berhampur area.
When contacted, a forest official said that efforts are being made to tranquilise the animal.
