Bhubaneswar: In an effort to ensure road connectivity to unconnected villages across Orissa, the state government has decided to lay 5500-km road under PMGSY scheme this year.
The decision was taken at a high-level meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary AP Padhi Wednesday.
“Roads under the Pradhan Manatri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) will be laid with an investment of `2500 crore. In the past two years, the Centre has not sanctioned any project under the scheme for Orissa,” rural development secretary Madhusudan Padhi said.
However, this year, the Centre has sanctioned 1368 projects in two phases and the Union rural development ministry has assured provision of more fund to the state, after completion of the sanctioned projects, he said.
The government has set a target of constructing roads connecting connect 1083 villages through 5,864 projects with an investment of `2848crore this year. Of the total projects, 1750-km road has been constructed with an investment of `840crore till October last, the secretary said. As many as 613 old projects are underway in the state. The Chief Secretary directed the concerned officials to complete those projects before June 2017.
The scheme is being funded by both the Centre (60 per cent) and the state government (40 per cent). The state has decided to provide all weather roads to all unconnected villages of the state by 2019.
