Cuttack: A young finance professional, scheduled to get married in three days, was called out of his home by unknown person and attacked brutally resulting in his death in Jagatpur area in the city Monday.
Nirjhar Behera (28), the assistant manager (finance) of Stewart School in Bhubaneswar, was found near Birupa bridge in Choudwar limits with over 20 wounds on his body inflicted with a sharp-edged weapon. Bleeding profusely, the youth was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police suspect Behera was murdered due to love affair or some financial deals. The assailants escaped with Behera’s cellphone and car keys. Meanwhile, Jagatpur police have launched a probe.
“Two special teams have been formed to crack the murder mystery,” said deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Akhileshvar Singh.
According to sources, Behera hailed from Kapaleswar in Choudwar police limits. His father Kamal Kumar Behera works as sub divisional officer (SDO) in BSNL while his mother Minakshi is a noted educationist. He has a sister, Nansi.
Behera’s marriage was scheduled for January 10, while his sister’s marriage was fixed for January 12. The family and their relatives were busy in arrangements for the marriages when the tragedy struck.
Sources said Behera got a call on his cellphone at around 10pm Sunday. Soon after he left home in his car. At 11pm, he called up and told his family that he was near Birupa bridge. However, he could not be contacted further and he did not return home till late night.
Subsequently, the family members along with two of his friends went to Birupa bridge and searched for him. While his car was parked along the road, Behera was found bleeding profusely 50 metres away from his car.
He was immediately shifted to a private nursing home. As his condition deteriorated, the nursing home referred him to SCB. He was rushed to SCB in a police van, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Sources said Jagatpur police did not have any information about the incident till late night until Choudwar police alerted them about it. The officials of both police stations visited the crime scene and conducted preliminary inquiry.
Jagatpur police have registered a case under Section 302 of IPC and are trying to trace the phone number from which the call was made to Behera.
